Bed-to-Bed Medical Transport: Room to Room, Not Curb to Curb

We start at the bed they're lying in and finish at the bed they're going to. Our crew does every transfer at both ends. You don't lift, and your loved one never has to sit up, stand, or change vehicles along the way.

What does bed-to-bed transport mean?

Bed-to-bed transport (also called bedside-to-bedside) means the transport crew collects your loved one from the bed they are in and delivers them into the bed they are going to, handling every transfer in between. Not the lobby. Not the driveway. The room.

It sounds like a small distinction until you've tried to arrange the alternative. Curb-to-curb services meet you outside: getting your mother from her hospital room down to the vehicle is your problem, and getting her from the vehicle into her bedroom at the other end is your problem too. For someone who can't stand or sit up, that's not a detail. That's the whole trip.

We do both ends. Our crew brings the stretcher to the bedside, performs the transfer themselves, secures her in a real bed in the van, and reverses it exactly at the destination, then walks whoever is receiving her through the medication schedule before they leave.

The difference that matters

Bed-to-bed vs. curb-to-curb: the same trip, two different days

Say your father is being discharged from a hospital in Ohio to your home in Florida.

Curb-to-curb

You arrange hospital staff to get him downstairs. You coordinate the timing so the vehicle isn't waiting. You find someone to help lift him in. Fourteen hundred miles later the vehicle stops at your driveway, and now you need two people and a plan to get a man who cannot stand into a bedroom at the back of the house. You've been solving logistics all day.

Bed-to-bed

Our crew walks into his room at the agreed time. They transfer him onto the stretcher, roll him out, and settle him into the bed in the van. You ride along or you fly ahead. At your house, our crew brings him inside, transfers him into his own bed, hands over his medication schedule, and confirms he's comfortable before they go.

How the bed-to-bed handoff works

  1. 1

    At the bedside

The crew arrives at the room, introduces themselves to your loved one, and does the transfer onto the stretcher. They collect the discharge paperwork, medications and oxygen orders directly from the nursing staff.

  2. 2

    On the road

A real bed on a memory-foam mattress, a medical professional beside it, medications on schedule, and a seat and a bed for family. On long routes two drivers rotate so the vehicle keeps moving safely while your loved one sleeps.

  3. 3

    At the destination bed

The reverse, in the receiving room: home, a facility, or a hospice suite. The crew settles them in, walks the receiving family or staff through the handoff, and doesn't leave until it's done.

Why not everyone offers it

Bed-to-bed only works if the crew belongs to the company

Doing both ends properly means the same trained people who picked her up are the ones who set her down, hours or days later, in another state. That's difficult to promise if you farm the driving out to whoever bid cheapest that week, which is why a lot of companies quietly deliver to the curb instead.

We own every Mercedes Sprinter in our fleet, and every crew member on your trip is part of our own team. Fully licensed, over ten million patient miles since 2010, and a coordinator who talks directly to the discharge planner so nothing lands on you.

More questions answered →

What is the difference between bed-to-bed and bedside-to-bedside?
Nothing. They're two names for the same thing. Some hospitals and discharge planners say "bedside to bedside," families more often say "bed to bed." Both mean the crew handles the patient from the bed they're leaving to the bed they're arriving in.
Do I need to arrange help to get my loved one into the vehicle?
No. Our crew performs every transfer at both ends. You don't lift anything and you don't need to arrange extra hands. That's the service you're paying for.
Can you come up to a hospital room or an upstairs bedroom?
Yes. We collect from hospital rooms, facility rooms, and private homes including upstairs bedrooms and walk-ups. Tell us about stairs, narrow hallways or elevators when you call and we'll plan the equipment and crew around them.
Will my loved one change vehicles during the trip?
Almost never. On nearly every trip one vehicle carries them the whole way, and two drivers rotate on long routes so the van keeps moving safely. On a rare, very long cross-country trip we may relay partway to a second ACC Medlink crew and vehicle. If your trip could involve that, we'll tell you when you book.
Can family ride along?
Yes. Family rides right beside the patient, with a real seat and a bed to rest on for the whole trip. Most families send one or two people.
How much does bed-to-bed transport cost?
It depends on distance, level of care and crew. You'll have a same-day quote before you commit to anything, and the quote you approve is the price you pay. See what drives the number.
