Most New Hampshire Trips Start or End in Another State

New Hampshire is too small for a long trip to stay inside it. Pittsburg, up on the Quebec line, is 193 road miles from Nashua, and even that falls short of our 200-mile minimum. So nearly every trip we drive here has one end somewhere else. A daughter in New Jersey may want her father closer after a bad winter in Laconia, a drive of 357 road miles to Trenton. A son in Cleveland may need his mother brought to Dartmouth Hitchcock in Lebanon, 601 road miles away, and taken home again when it's over. Whichever way the trip runs, your loved one lies in a real bed with a medical professional aboard, and one of you can ride along.

Leaving New Hampshire

Families call us for this trip when:

  • A parent in the Lakes Region or the North Country can't manage alone anymore, and the children live in New Jersey, Ohio or farther off
  • Treatment at Dartmouth Hitchcock or a stay in a Manchester hospital has ended, and home is in another state
  • Someone who winters in Florida wants to get south before the snow but can't sit in a car or board a plane
  • A summer visitor at a lake cottage, or a skier, ends up in a New Hampshire hospital far from home

We can load at a hospital room in Concord, a nursing home in Keene or a farmhouse past Colebrook. The next bed can be in any of the lower 48 states.

Arriving in New Hampshire

And they call us for this one when:

  • A bed is waiting at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, Dartmouth Cancer Center or a rehab hospital in Salem
  • A parent is moving from New Jersey or Ohio to be near you in Nashua, Bedford or Portsmouth
  • Someone from New Hampshire got sick in Florida or on the road and wants to recover at home
  • A hospice patient wants to get back to the family place on the lake

We can start at a bedside anywhere in the lower 48. The last stretch might be Medical Center Drive in Lebanon or a camp road on Winnipesaukee. Tell us which, and we'll plan for it.

Six Ways Families Use Our Vans In and Out of New Hampshire

Coming to New Hampshire for care

When the Bed Waiting for Your Loved One Is in New Hampshire

New Hampshire has major care of its own. Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon is the state's only academic medical center and its only Level I trauma center. Dartmouth Cancer Center describes itself as one of three National Cancer Institute designated comprehensive centers in New England. Northeast Rehabilitation Hospital Network runs acute rehab hospitals in Salem, Nashua, Portsmouth and Manchester, and Catholic Medical Center in Manchester offers advanced heart care. If a doctor has arranged a place for your loved one, we can drive from their bed in another state to the admitting door, and home again afterward.

Pickups and Drop-Offs, Nashua to the Connecticut Lakes

Give us any address in New Hampshire. About three in ten of the state's people live in Hillsborough County, where Manchester and Nashua have four general hospitals between them. Coos County, at the top of the map, had just 31,268 people in the 2020 Census, and Berlin to Pittsburg alone is 70 road miles. We go to both. The one limit is the 200 miles. For a ride like Berlin to Manchester, 131 road miles, a local service is the better fit.

What It Takes to Set Up a New Hampshire Trip

Send us both addresses

Call, or use the quote form, with the two ends of the trip: a Concord hospital and a house in Dayton, 823 road miles apart, or the same drive in reverse. That same day, you get one price for all of it.

Pass along the hospital's date

Case managers at places like Elliot and Dartmouth Hitchcock work to discharge dates. So do hospitals in Ohio or New Jersey sending someone home. Give us the date, and we'll plan backward from it.

The crew comes to the bedside

They bring your loved one out to the Mercedes Sprinter and settle them on a real bed. A medical professional stays aboard the whole ride. One family member can come too, with a real seat and a bed to rest on.

Two drivers share the long runs

On a long run, like the 664 road miles between Littleton and Youngstown, Ohio, two drivers take turns, so the van keeps going while your loved one rests. Whichever way you're headed, the crew sees them into the next bed at the far end.

Before you pick a date

Notches, Snow and Short Distances: Planning Around New Hampshire

The roads that carry these trips

I-93 runs about 132 miles north from the Massachusetts line through Manchester, Concord and Littleton. The Everett Turnpike links Nashua with Manchester and heads on toward Concord. I-89 splits off in Bow and covers about 61 miles to Lebanon and the Vermont line. On the Seacoast, I-95 crosses the state in about 16 miles. Route 16 climbs from Portsmouth past Rochester to Conway and Berlin. Whether your loved one is leaving or coming home, these roads are the first or last miles of the drive.

Winter in the notches

New Hampshire gets from 60 to more than 100 inches of snow a year, and winter is hardest in the north and the mountains. Route 16 goes through Pinkham Notch beside Mount Washington, whose summit averages about 280 inches a season. In Franconia Notch, I-93 narrows to one lane each way at 45 mph. If your date is in winter, leave some room around it. We watch the forecast and move the trip if the roads aren't safe, whether the van is leaving Berlin or heading north from New Jersey. New England 511 shows road conditions.

Winters in Florida, summers on the lake

Some retirees spend the cold months in Florida. A health scare in Fort Myers can leave a Concord family 1,516 road miles from home. Summer works the other way. Cottages on the lakes and the seacoast draw visitors from Boston and New York, and a bad fall in Wolfeboro can mean a long trip home. If home is Columbus, Ohio, that's 795 road miles. We drive these trips in both directions, whatever the season.

Why most in-state rides are too short for us

Our minimum is 200 miles, and New Hampshire rarely gets there. Concord to Lebanon is 57 road miles. Manchester to Lebanon is 72. Colebrook to Nashua is 174, and Pittsburg to Nashua is 193. We'd rather tell you that today than waste your time. For rides like those, a local medical transport service is the better fit.

Boston is close, and that changes the math

Massachusetts General Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute are close to the state line. Nashua to Boston is 45 road miles, Manchester is 53, Keene is 91, Lebanon is 121 and Berlin is 182. Those rides fall under our minimum. Colebrook just clears it at 205. Where we can help is the long trip around that care: your loved one finishes treatment in Boston and home is far away, or comes from far away to start it. Boston to Cleveland is 639 road miles, and we drive that in either direction.

The kids moved away. The house is here.

The 2020 Census counted 19.3% of New Hampshire's people at 65 or older. When one of them lands in the hospital, the call may reach a son in Ohio or a daughter in New Jersey. We can bring your parent from Concord or Keene to a bed near you. And if your parent is the one out of state and you've settled in Dover or Bedford, the same trip runs the other way.

How we price it

What Goes Into the Number for a New Hampshire Trip

You get one figure for the whole trip, and once you say yes, that's the figure you pay. Six things move it, whether you're headed from a Seacoast condo to a Cleveland hospital or the other way around.

How far you are going

Distance matters most. Manchester to Hartford, at 135 road miles, doesn't reach our 200-mile start. Nashua to Trenton, at 297, does. Long routes run more efficiently, so 1,000 miles won't cost five times what 200 does.

What care they need on the road

A patient who mostly needs a bed and someone watching over them costs less to move than one on continuous oxygen. A bariatric-rated lift and stretcher also adds to the price. Tell us what the discharge team at either end has ordered, and we'll price what your loved one needs.

Who is aboard

The 702 road miles between Keene and Columbus, in either direction, take two drivers in rotation plus the medical professional, so the van can keep rolling while your loved one sleeps. Shorter runs need fewer people.

When you need to leave

A date we can plan for costs less than a van that has to leave tomorrow, and that goes for a bed waiting in New Hampshire too. In winter, leave room for a storm to move the date. In September and October, tell us early if your route touches the Kancamagus Highway between Lincoln and Conway, when leaf-peepers crowd it.

What each address is like

A hospital entrance in Manchester is a simple pickup. A farmhouse on a dirt road in March or April is a different job, because that's mud season in northern New England. Tell us about the road, the stairs and the doors at both ends.

What goes on the van

Tell us what your loved one uses each day, such as oxygen, a specialty mattress or bariatric gear. It comes along for the whole drive, from Portsmouth to Ohio or from New Jersey up to Lebanon. If they don't need it, it stays behind.

This is private pay, so your family pays us directly by card, check or bank transfer. CareCredit financing is available, and veterans can ask about our discount.

New Hampshire Medical Transport Questions

Don't see yours? Call. A real person on our team answers, day or night.

More questions answered →

My parents live near Laconia and I live in New Jersey. Can you bring them to me?
Yes. It's 357 road miles from Laconia to Trenton, and your parent would make that trip lying in a real bed with a medical professional aboard. We go to the house, the hospital or the care home, and finish at the next bed near you. Call 1-800-550-1025 with both addresses and we'll give you a price today.
My mother is in a hospital in Ohio and wants to come home to Manchester. Can you do that?
Yes, and it works the same way as a trip out. We pick her up at the bedside in Ohio and drive to her bed in New Hampshire. On the 809 road miles from Columbus to Manchester, two drivers rotate so the van keeps moving. Send us the date the hospital gave you, and we'll plan around it.
Can you take my husband from Manchester to a hospital in Boston?
No, that one is too short for us. Manchester to Boston is 53 road miles, and our minimum is 200. A local medical transport service is the better fit. Lebanon to Boston, at 121, and Berlin to Boston, at 182, fall short as well. Colebrook to Boston just clears it at 205.
Will you bring a patient from another state to Dartmouth Hitchcock in Lebanon?
Yes, from anywhere in the lower 48. Lebanon is 277 road miles from Newark and 601 from Cleveland. Once the hospital gives you an admission date, send it to us. When treatment ends, we can drive your loved one home too. We aren't affiliated with Dartmouth Health, so the admission itself is arranged through the hospital and your doctor.
What happens if a storm hits the White Mountains on our travel date?
We won't drive your loved one into it. We follow the forecast for roads like Route 16 through Pinkham Notch and I-93 through Franconia Notch, which narrows to one lane each way. If a storm threatens, we'll talk with you about leaving earlier or later and change the schedule. If a hospital date is involved, let us know early so there's room to move.
Do you really go up past Berlin and Colebrook?
Yes. We pick up and drop off anywhere in New Hampshire, including Coos County and Pittsburg, up by the Connecticut Lakes. The trip just has to run 200 miles or more. Boston falls short from Berlin, but New Jersey doesn't: Berlin to Morristown is 403 road miles. Tell us about the driveway and the stairs when you call.
My parents winter in Florida and my dad just went into the hospital there. Can you bring him home?
Yes. Fort Myers to Concord is 1,516 road miles, and Sarasota to Portsmouth is 1,452. Two drivers rotate on a run that long, and a medical professional stays with him the whole way. We can also take him down in the fall, if he can't fly or sit in a car. Call 1-800-550-1025 and tell us which hospital he's in.
The hospital in Manchester wants to discharge my father on Friday. How soon can you be there?
Often within days. Discharge deadlines are a normal part of our work, whether the hospital is in Manchester or in another state sending someone home to New Hampshire. Tell us the date and both addresses, and we'll tell you what's possible. Someone answers 24/7, so call as soon as you hear from the case manager.
Can I ride in the van with my wife from Portsmouth to the Jersey Shore?
Yes. One family member can ride along, with a real seat and a bed to rest on right beside her. The drive to Toms River is 338 road miles. The medical professional aboard handles her care the whole way, so you can just sit with her and talk.
What does a New Hampshire trip cost, and is it less than flying?
We price each trip by route and care needs, and you'll have the number the same day. The figure you approve is what you pay. If your loved one is stable, going by road costs a fraction of an air ambulance, though if their doctor says they must fly, they should fly. It's private pay. CareCredit and veteran discounts are available. Call 1-800-550-1025 for your quote.

Ready to Plan a Trip To or From New Hampshire?

Maybe your father is in a Concord hospital and you're in New Jersey. Maybe a bed at Dartmouth Hitchcock is waiting and your loved one is in Cleveland. Send us the two addresses. You'll have one price today, and we'll plan the drive from one bed to the next.
