Long Drives Out of Kansas, Long Drives Back In

Kansas is a long state. I-70 alone runs about 424 miles from the Colorado line to the Missouri line, and a patient in Goodland is 407 road miles from KU Med in Kansas City, Kansas. So a trip can clear our 200-mile minimum without ever crossing a border. Others head for another state. It might be a father in Wichita moving 707 road miles to a daughter in Chicago, or a mother in Tampa coming home to Wichita, which is 1,413. On any of them, your loved one lies down in a real bed for the whole drive, with a medical professional aboard. Nobody has to sit upright in a back seat for hours of open plains.

Leaving Kansas

This trip may be the right one when:

  • A parent in Hays or Garden City can't live alone anymore, and the kids settled in Des Moines, Chicago or Phoenix
  • Treatment at KU Med or in Wichita is finished, and home is in another state
  • Someone traveling through on I-70 or I-35 landed in a Kansas hospital, far from their own family
  • Your loved one is moving to memory care or rehab near the relatives who can visit

We can start from a Wichita hospital room, a nursing home in Salina or a farmhouse north of Colby. From there, we drive bed to bed to any of the lower 48.

Coming Into Kansas

Going the other way, it might look like this:

  • A Kansan got sick while wintering in Florida or Arizona and wants to come home
  • A patient from another state has an appointment with the University of Kansas Cancer Center
  • Your parent is moving to Olathe or Overland Park so you can look after them
  • Someone on hospice wants to be back in their own house in Kiowa County

The start can be anywhere in the lower 48, from a Denver hospital to a Tampa rehab center. The drive ends at the next bed, whether that's an admitting desk in Kansas City, a room in Wichita or the back bedroom at the farm.

Coming to Kansas for care

Why Families Head for Kansas City, Wichita and Topeka

The University of Kansas Cancer Center is the only center in Kansas on the National Cancer Institute's list of designated centers, and it holds the comprehensive designation. The center says it has treated patients from all 50 states since 2012. KU Med, the academic medical center in Kansas City, Kansas, is a Level I trauma center whose transplant team reached 5,000 organs in 2021. In Wichita, Ascension Via Christi St. Francis has a Level I trauma center, a regional burn center and comprehensive stroke care. Stormont Vail in Topeka is a 586-bed referral hospital for northeast Kansas. When a bed opens up at one of these, we can drive your loved one from wherever they are to the admitting door, and home afterward.

Kansas Pickups and Drop-Offs, Town by Town

A discharge desk, a nursing home, a rehab wing or a farmhouse, anywhere in Kansas: we'll load or unload at any of them, whichever way your loved one is headed. Most Kansans live toward the east, with more than 1.5 million on the Kansas side of the Kansas City metro and around Topeka, Lawrence and Manhattan. Out west, the towns thin out and the drives get long. Goodland is 323 road miles from Wichita, and Garden City is 375 from Kansas City, Kansas. A family coming home from Denver or Tampa can land in any Kansas town too.

When the Hospital Sets a Deadline: How a Kansas Trip Works

★★★★★
“The crew was hired to drive my mother from Kansas City Missouri to DownEast Maine. It's a long drive and requires you to navigate some not so fun cities like Boston.”
Solvey Y., verified post-trip survey · May 2025

Give us both ends

Tell us the pickup and the drop-off. Maybe that's a Wichita hospital and a house in Phoenix, or a Denver rehab center and a farm outside Hays. Before the day is out, you'll have one number for the whole drive.

Pass along the hospital's deadline

Case managers at KU Med, Stormont Vail or a hospital in Florida may not give you much notice. Hand us the date they gave you. Discharge deadlines come with this work, and we'll plan the trip around yours as closely as we can.

We start at the bedside

Our crew comes to the room and moves your loved one onto the bed in the Sprinter. No one has to wheel them out to the curb and wait. A medical professional stays with them the full distance, and one relative can come along.

Two drivers for the long hauls

Tampa to Wichita is 1,413 road miles. Drivers take turns on a run like that, so your loved one can sleep while the van covers ground, and nobody has to rush the last stretch across Kansas.

Before you pick a date

Kansas Roads, Storms and Distances to Plan Around

I-70, I-35, I-135 and US-54

I-70 crosses the whole state through Kansas City, Topeka, Salina and Hays. I-35 runs about 235 miles from the Oklahoma line through Wichita and Emporia, then up through Olathe and Overland Park. Part of it is the Kansas Turnpike, including a 35-mile Flint Hills stretch with no exits. I-135 links Wichita to Salina in about 96 miles. From Liberal, US-54 heads northeast, two lanes through Pratt, and becomes Kellogg Avenue in Wichita. So a trip to or from Liberal runs on slower road than one to or from Olathe, and we plan for that.

Out west, check which clock you're on

Sherman, Wallace, Greeley and Hamilton counties sit on the Colorado line and run on Mountain Time, an hour behind Wichita. So confirm the time on any discharge from Goodland or any arrival there. Geography can surprise you there too. Goodland is 198 road miles from Denver and 323 from Wichita, so the closest big city may be in another state.

Spring and early summer storms

Kansas averages more than 50 tornadoes a year, and severe weather comes mostly in spring and early summer. On May 4, 2007, an EF5 tornado damaged or destroyed about 95% of Greensburg, on US-54 west of Pratt, and left the county hospital unable to care for patients. Nobody can forecast that weeks out. If your date lands in storm season, leave a little room around it. We watch the forecast and move the schedule when the road isn't safe.

Snow and wind on the high plains

Snowfall runs from around 5 inches a year at the state's southern edge to about 35 in the far northwest. That far corner is Goodland and Colby country. Wind can matter as much as snow. In December 2021, blowing dust and crashes closed I-70 from the Colorado line all the way east to Salina. For a winter trip into or across western Kansas, tell us early, so there's time to go a day sooner or later.

The kids moved. The folks stayed.

Many small Kansas towns have been shrinking for generations. Historian Daniel C. Fitzgerald counts more than 6,000 ghost towns and dwindling communities in the state, while parts of Johnson County have grown fast. So the call from a small-town hospital may reach a son in Overland Park or a daughter in Iowa. We can bring your parent to you, and take them back if they decide they want to go home.

Which side of Kansas City?

The metro spans the Kansas-Missouri border. KU Med sits on the Kansas side, at 4000 Cambridge Street, and the proton therapy center is nearby on Rainbow Boulevard. The Cancer Center lists 13 locations around the metro, some in Missouri, including Briarcliff and Lee's Summit. So send us the street address, not only the city name. Cancer care or a transplant may also mean two trips, one to admission and one home at discharge, and we drive both.

Plain talk on cost

What Moves the Number on a Kansas Trip

Your quote is one figure for the entire drive, and it's the figure you pay once you approve it. Six things push it up or down, and they work the same if you're leaving Goodland or coming home to Topeka.

Mileage

Distance counts most, and our minimum is 200 miles. Hays to Kansas City clears that at 267. Wichita to Kansas City comes in at 196, so exact addresses decide it. Long drives cost less per mile, so 1,000 miles comes to less than five times the price of 200.

How much care is needed

A stable patient who mainly needs a bed and someone watching over them costs less. Continuous oxygen or a bariatric lift and stretcher adds to the price.

People on board

A run such as Fort Myers to Kansas City, 1,378 road miles, carries two drivers trading off, plus the medical professional. More miles take more crew time.

How much notice you can give

A trip we can plan ahead costs less than a van leaving tomorrow morning. For dates during storm season or a western Kansas winter, give us a heads-up, so there's room to shift.

Where the van has to go

The entrance at KU Med is one kind of job. A farmhouse at the end of a dirt lane in Ness County is another. Tell us about the lane, any stairs and how wide the hallway is, at both ends.

Gear for this patient

Oxygen, a specialty mattress and bariatric equipment come along only when your loved one needs them. You don't pay for gear they won't use.

You pay us directly by card, check or bank transfer. If you'd like to spread out the cost, CareCredit financing is an option. We also give veteran discounts.

Kansas Medical Transport Questions

Don't see yours? Call. A real person on our team answers, day or night.

More questions answered →

Mom lives in western Kansas and her cancer doctors are in Kansas City. Can you drive her?
Yes, and that trip clears our 200-mile minimum without crossing a state line. Goodland and Liberal are each 407 road miles from Kansas City, Kansas. Garden City is 375, and Hays is 267. She rides in a real bed with a medical professional aboard, and we can take her home after treatment. For a price, call 1-800-550-1025 with both addresses.
Is Wichita to Kansas City far enough for your 200-mile minimum?
It's close. City center to city center, that drive is 196 road miles, so your exact addresses decide it. Garden City to Wichita at 219 and Liberal to Wichita at 211 are long enough. Salina to Kansas City at 175, Hays to Wichita at 183, Dodge City to Wichita at 154 and Topeka to Kansas City at 61 are not. For those, a local medical transport service is the better fit.
My father got sick in Florida. Can you bring him home to Kansas?
Yes. We pick him up at the hospital or rehab center there and bring him to his own bed here. Orlando to Kansas City is 1,243 road miles, and Tampa to Wichita is 1,413. Two drivers take turns on a run that long. Tell us the date the hospital gave you, and where home is, even if it's well off the interstate.
Can you bring someone from another state to the University of Kansas Cancer Center?
Yes, from anywhere in the lower 48. Denver to Kansas City is 603 road miles, for example. Once you have an admission or appointment date, send it to us and we'll plan around it. The Cancer Center has locations on both sides of the state line, so we'll need the street address. We aren't affiliated with the center or the health system.
What happens to our trip if tornadoes are in the forecast?
We change the schedule. We won't drive your loved one into a storm to keep a date. Kansas gets most of its severe weather in spring and early summer, so if your trip home or your trip out falls then, talk with us about leaving a day earlier or later. We follow the forecast and adjust the plan so the trip stays safe.
Our farm is a long way down a dirt road. Can your van get there?
Tell us about it, and we'll plan for it. We pick up and drop off anywhere in Kansas, including a farmhouse well off I-70 or US-54. When you call, describe the road in, the steps and the doorways. That way the crew knows what to expect, and your quote reflects the real job at your door.
We live out by Goodland. Can you take my husband to Denver instead of Kansas City?
It depends on the exact addresses. Goodland to Denver is 198 road miles between city centers, right at our minimum. Colby to Denver clears it at 233, and Garden City to Denver at 309. Remember that Goodland runs on Mountain Time, the same as Denver. Call 1-800-550-1025 with the pickup and the drop-off, and we'll give you a straight answer.
The Wichita hospital says Dad has to leave by Friday. How soon can you come?
Often within days. A date like that is normal for us, so give it to us and we'll tell you what's possible. The same goes for a hospital in Colorado or Florida sending your dad home to Kansas. Someone answers 24/7, so you can call as soon as the case manager tells you.
Can I ride along with my mom from Overland Park to Chicago?
Yes. One family member can ride along for the full 522 road miles. The medical professional takes care of her needs on the way, so you can sit with her, talk or get some rest. Let us know who's riding when you book, so we can plan for it.
How much do you charge to take someone to or from Kansas?
It depends on the route and on the care your loved one needs, so we quote every trip the same day. Whatever figure you approve is what you pay. This is private pay, which means your family pays us directly. CareCredit financing is available, and we offer veteran discounts. Call 1-800-550-1025 for your number.

Ready to Plan a Trip To or From Kansas?

A farmhouse outside Colby and a daughter's home in Denver. A hospital bed in Tampa and a house in Wichita. Send us your two addresses. You'll get one number today, and we'll work out the rest of the drive from there.
