Delaware is only 96 miles long. Selbyville, on the Maryland line, to Claymont, up near Pennsylvania, is 111 road miles, so no ride inside the state reaches our 200-mile minimum. Plenty of people who retired to the Delaware shore came from somewhere else, and their children may live even farther away. When Mom can't stay alone in Rehoboth any longer, or Dad wants to go back to West Virginia, our crews take it slow. Dementia and anxiety are part of their work every week.

I-95 covers only about 23 miles of Delaware, from the Maryland line at Newark up through Wilmington. North of that, a trip follows it into Pennsylvania or takes the Delaware Memorial Bridge, twin spans that link the Delaware Turnpike to the New Jersey Turnpike. More than 100,000 vehicles cross those spans on a typical day, as of 2024. Wilmington and Boston are 339 road miles apart, and the hour you reach those spans matters. We plan around it whether your loved one is leaving for New England or coming home from there.
As of 2026, the National Cancer Institute's list of designated centers shows none in Delaware. Philadelphia and Baltimore both have them, so your loved one may be treated there. Wilmington to Philadelphia is 32 road miles and Wilmington to Baltimore is 70. Dover to Philadelphia is 83. Lewes to either city is 120. A local medical transport service is the better fit for those, going or coming home, and we'll tell you so. New York splits: Wilmington at 123 and Dover at 172 fall short, and Lewes clears at 207.
DE-1 runs about 103 miles, from I-95 at Christiana to the Maryland line at Fenwick Island. In summer the peaks are predictable: southbound on Friday evening, both ways on Saturday afternoon and northbound on Sunday afternoon. If a discharge from Beebe or a move into a shore house lands on a July weekend, tell us early so we can pick an hour that misses the worst of it. US-113 is the inland road, running from Selbyville up through Millsboro and Georgetown to Milford.
Near the inlet, Route 1 runs on a thin strip between the ocean and the bay. On March 26, 2024, a dune breach put seawater across the northbound lanes. That August, tides tied to Hurricane Ernesto closed the road in both directions near the bridge. It's also a primary hurricane evacuation route. A trip home to Bethany or Fenwick Island needs that road as much as a trip leaving does, so if your date falls in storm season, leave some room around it. We'll move the schedule if the road isn't safe, and DelDOT posts closures.
From Sussex County, a trip to the Carolinas can take Route 404 and US-50 west over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, then pick up I-95 near Washington. Or it can follow US-13 down the Delmarva Peninsula and cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, 17.6 miles shore to shore. Some vehicles are held off that crossing when winds top 40 mph, and all traffic above 65 mph, so we check before choosing it. A loved one coming home from Charlotte or Raleigh has the same two choices in reverse.
The Cape Gazette reported in August 2024 that more than 32,000 people had moved to Sussex County from other states since 2020, most of them from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, New York and Washington, D.C. HousingWire reported in 2026, citing Bloomberg, that Delaware's 65-and-older population had grown 23% since 2020, more than any other state. So the call from Beebe may reach a son in Boston or a daughter in Atlanta. We can bring your parent to you, or back to the shore later.

This is the biggest piece. Our minimum is 200 miles, so Dover to New York, at 172, doesn't qualify, and Dover to Richmond, at 204, just does. Long routes run more efficiently, so Dover to Atlanta, at 735, usually costs less per mile than the Richmond trip.
A loved one who's stable and needs a bed and someone watching over them costs the least to move. Continuous oxygen, monitoring or bariatric equipment costs more. Tell us what the team at Christiana, or the hospital sending them home to Delaware, has ordered.
A run like Lewes to Atlanta, at 761 road miles, carries two rotating drivers along with the medical professional, so the van keeps moving while your loved one sleeps. Longer trips need more people aboard, and that's part of your one price.
