Some families want a parent back in the hills around Johnson City for the last weeks. Others need to get Dad to a daughter's home in Texas. We run the trip for comfort, talk with the hospice team directly, and drive in whichever direction home is.

Vanderbilt-Ingram in Nashville is a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Vanderbilt University Medical Center also has an organ transplant center. Methodist University Hospital in Memphis focuses on oncology, cardiology, neurology and transplants. University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville takes referrals from East Tennessee and parts of Kentucky and North Carolina. Erlanger's Level I trauma center in Chattanooga serves a region reaching into north Georgia, north Alabama and western North Carolina. If your loved one can't fly or ride in a car to reach one of them, we bring them bed to bed for admission and take them home after discharge.

Memphis and Fort Lauderdale sit 1,031 road miles apart. On a route like that, in either direction, two drivers trade the wheel and the van keeps moving while your loved one rests. When you reach the other end, the crew settles them into the next bed before leaving.
I-40 runs 455 miles across Tennessee through Memphis, Nashville and Knoxville. I-65 comes up from Alabama through Nashville toward Louisville. I-24 connects Clarksville, Nashville and Chattanooga, where it meets I-75, which runs from Georgia through Knoxville to Kentucky. I-81 comes down from Virginia at Bristol to join I-40 at Dandridge, and I-26 leaves Johnson City for Asheville and Charleston. At Memphis, two interstate bridges cross the Mississippi. When inspectors found a fractured girder on the I-40 bridge in May 2021, it closed until that summer and traffic shifted to the I-55 bridge.
Between Nashville and Chattanooga, I-24 crosses the Cumberland Plateau at Monteagle, with a 6% grade for about 4.5 miles on the eastbound side. I-40 crosses the same plateau on the way to Knoxville, and I-75 climbs Jellico Mountain before Kentucky. At the North Carolina line, Hurricane Helene washed out I-40's eastbound lanes in the Pigeon River Gorge in 2024. The road reopened in March 2025 with one lane each way at 35 mph, so ask us how it looks for your date. Pickups in Sevierville, Pigeon Forge or Gatlinburg share the Parkway with visitors to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which drew over 11 million visitors in 2025.
The National Weather Service office in Nashville says nearly two-thirds of Middle Tennessee's tornadoes come in March, April and May, with a smaller peak around November. West Tennessee sees them too, and on March 3, 2020, tornadoes hit Nashville and Cookeville within hours of each other. Ice storms are fairly common here, and East Tennessee's highest mountains can pass 80 inches of snow. We watch the forecast before a departure. If the roads aren't safe, we'll call you and move the time.
A trip can stay in Tennessee and qualify if it's long enough. Memphis to Nashville is 212 road miles, Memphis to Chattanooga is 340 and Nashville to Johnson City is 285. Nashville to Knoxville falls short at 180, and so do Nashville to Chattanooga at 134 and Nashville to Clarksville at 50. Border hops often miss as well: Chattanooga to Atlanta is 118, Memphis to Little Rock is 137 and Nashville to Louisville is 176. For those, a local medical transport service is the better fit.
A cancer workup or transplant evaluation in Nashville or Memphis can last a while, and rehab can follow it. Vanderbilt Stallworth Rehabilitation Hospital in Nashville and the Patricia Neal Rehabilitation Center in Knoxville can be the next bed as easily as a hospital. Book the trip in first. Tellico Village in Loudon County is a planned retirement community, and 69.5% of its residents were 65 or older in the 2020 census. Fairfield Glade near Crossville is a resort and retirement community. Years later, the move can reverse, when a parent needs to be near a son or daughter again. Maryville to Lansing, Michigan, is 581 road miles, and Crossville to Fort Myers is 777. It can run the other way too, when a parent in Lansing moves down to be near you in Maryville. We start at the bed they're in and finish at the door of the new place.
You get one price for the whole trip before you commit, and the number you approve is the number you pay. These six things set it.
Miles set most of the price. A trip has to reach 200 miles, and Knoxville to Detroit runs 513 in either direction. Longer routes cost us less per mile to run, so 1,000 miles doesn't come to five times what 200 miles does.
A stable patient who mostly needs a bed and a medical professional close by costs less to move than someone on continuous oxygen, or someone who needs a bariatric-rated lift and stretcher.
Knoxville and Naples are 828 road miles apart, nearly all of it on I-75. A drive like that takes two drivers plus the medical professional, so the van keeps moving while your loved one sleeps. More crew on board is part of what you're paying for on the longest routes.
A departure we can plan toward costs less than one that has to happen tomorrow. As soon as a Memphis hospital names a date, or one in Florida says Dad can come home, or you know Mom's move-in day at the new place, send it to us.
A hospital dock in downtown Chattanooga is one kind of pickup. A cabin up a steep gravel road outside Gatlinburg is another, and so is a house at the end of a long farm lane outside Buffalo. Both addresses figure into the price.
Oxygen, a specialty mattress or bariatric equipment comes along when your loved one needs it. If they don't need it, it stays off the van.
